HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SWIM GEAR

When learning to swim, you’ll want to invest in swim gear that will help you adapt to the water quickly and successfully. In addition to finding the best swimwear, you’ll also want to make sure you or your child have the proper swimming accessories to thrive during swim lessons. Here’s a guide to picking the best swim gear for you and your beginning swimmer.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SWIMWEAR

Finding the right swimwear is the first step to help your beginner swimmer feel confident in the water. There are several important qualities to keep in mind when shopping for swimwear:

  • Comfort: While style is often prioritized when choosing swimwear, safety should be the most important aspect. Swimwear shouldn’t be overly loose or extremely tight or include frills or tassels that can tangle arms and restrict paddling. Instead, all swimwear should fit properly and comfortably, allowing for flexible and easy movement.

  • Durability: Swimwear must withstand a variety of conditions, including chlorine, salt water and sun exposure and damage from frequent wear-and-tear. Try to choose a high-quality swimsuit that is made of durable, lightweight, and fast drying material.

  • Style: Swim gear should be appropriate to the swimmers’ age, size and experience level. One-piece swimsuits are recommended for beginning female swimmers, and male swimmers are encouraged to wear fitted swim trunks.

OTHER SWIM GEAR AND SWIMMING ACCESSORIES

A swimsuit is not the only piece of swim gear you or your first-time swimmer will need. Necessary swimming accessories for first-time swimmers include:

  • Eye Gear: Goggles protect the eyes against pool chemicals and salt water to help you see under the water. Look for goggles with UV protection, adjustable straps and soft seals. For open-water swimming, consider a snorkel mask with the same qualities.

  • Ear Plugs: Ear infections are a common ailment for beginning swimmers as it’s easy for water to lodge in the ears while swimming. Silicone ear plugs will mold to the shape of the swimmer’s ear, keeping water out while staying secure and reducing discomfort.

  • Swim Caps: A swim cap not only protects hair from dangerous chemicals and sun damage, but it also keeps long hair away from the eyes and helps increase swimming speed. Like swimwear, swim caps should be made of a durable material and sized appropriately enough to comfortably stretch over the head.

  • Out-of-Water Accessories: Swimmers can experience a big change in body temperature while transitioning out of the water onto dry land, especially during colder months. Look for absorbent towels and robes to use to keep warm before and after swimming lessons.
